Liberal Member for Kalgoorlie Kyran O’Donnell has thrown his support behind the Criminal Amendment (Intimate Images) Bill, labelling it a necessary change to the law.

The Bill was introduced into State Parliament at the end of June to criminalise the non-consensual distribution of intimate images, colloquially known as “revenge porn”.

If passed, the Bill will amend the criminal code in WA to create a new offence relating to the non-consensual distribution of intimate images where perpetrators face up three years jail or a fine of up to $18,000.

It will also give courts the power to order the removal or destroy images which have been passed on to a third party without consent.

Mr O’Donnell said his time working as a police officer and in coaching roles with youth sports teams opened his eyes to the damage caused by the sharing of intimate photographs.

“I have in my time in the police seen people who have taken photographs of their partner and then try and bluff them or coerce them into doing things and holding it over them later on,” he said.

“You can’t just be spreading the photos of someone who has given you the image with the expectation it is only you will see it.

“Some of these images go straight on to Facebook and the next minute a person’s whole world comes crashing down around them.” Mr O’Donnell said young girls in particular were susceptible to the risk. He said once the Bill has passed he will approach local high schools to see if they are amenable to their senior students learning of the new law and the dangers of sharing intimate images.
