A new study from Seniorly ahead of Valentine’s Day has found that the six New England states are all among some of the best for single, older adults to find love in the U.S.
The study, published Monday, analyzed 12 metrics across three main categories of “health and well-being,” “family life” and “financial health” for American adults age 65 and over.
Seniorly indicated that of the six New England states, New Hampshire ranked highest at fifth place out of all 50 American states and the District of Columbia.
The Granite State was followed closely by Vermont in 7th overall, then by Maine in 9th, Connecticut in 11th, Massachusetts in 15th and Rhode Island in 17th — putting the region collectively in the top half of the ranking.
South Dakota was ranked the best state overall for older adults looking for companionship, whereas West Virginia ranked in last place, according to Seniorly’s study.
The organization said that New Hampshire ranked in the top five thanks to it having the “highest proportion of seniors in good health” at 82.2%, a “very low rate of sexually transmitted infections” at 4.8 per 100,000 individuals, and a “fairly balanced gender ratio” of 1.14, meaning there are 114 older women for every 100 older men.
States that had lower rates of mental health distress, higher life expectancy, lower STI rates, lower rates of romance scam victimhood, more plentiful dining options and better date night costs improved their scoring.
The study also concluded that “more fish in the sea isn’t always better,” with the four most populous states — California, Texas, Florida and New York — all ranking in the lower half of the study’s findings.
Seniorly added that states with fewer single seniors tended to score better overall calling it “an ironic twist” that it chalked up to “stronger long-term relationship stability, better social support networks and healthier aging populations.”
States that performed worst in the rankings tended to be in the South or Sun Belt regions of the country, while states in the Northeast, Midwest and West tended to rank among the highest, based on Seniorly’s findings.
Seniorly noted that a record 25.9 million American seniors are single, or 43.7% out of 59.3 million total seniors — an increase of 5.8 million from a decade prior.
Seniorly added that another 4.2 million Americans turning 65 in 2025 as a part of the so-called “silver tsunami” of Baby Boomers.
