The pandemic has led to a paradigm shift in people’s lifestyle where everyone is now working, socializing, and even DATING from home. Yes, the dating world also saw a complete transformation in 2020 as people found new creative ways to keep the dating spark alive even amid the pandemic . Bumble, a popular dating app, recently conducted a study to understand how dating in 2020 has been redefined by people and what the trends have been like for daters in India this year.

Bumble’s most recent data revealed that over 40% of daters in India said that they are no longer confident about dating successfully and 70% of single Indians say they are not comfortable navigating dating in 2020, while one in two claim they are ready to go on a date in-person. The report also states that the need for social connections grew significantly since March when lockdown and social distancing restrictions began in India. In fact, over 540 million messages have been sent on Bumble in India in 2020.

Bumble report also revealed some other interesting insights around online dating in 2020. When it comes to the most popular topic of conversation in 2020, it was ‘working from home’ where 57% of daters discussed this as their new normal. The most popular prompt used in India in 2020 was – Beach or mountains, Nightclub or Netflix, ‘We’ll get on if..’, After work, you can find me.., and Favorite quality in a person.

The most used emoji on Bumble profiles in India was the classic red heart (??). The other top 4 emojis used by women on Bumble profiles were: (?), (?), (?), (?). The other top 4 emojis used by men on Bumble profiles were: (?), (?), (?), (?). Zodiac signs also continued to be a hot topic amongst the Bumble community. Leos were most lucky in love across India on Bumble this year, followed by Scorpio and Libra.

Bumble has also made some predictions for 2021. The report states that dating in-person is not off the table with one in two people from the Bumble community in India claiming that they are ready to date in-person. Secondly, Bumble daters in India are increasingly open to virtual dating with 1 in 5 up for using Video Chat heading into the New Year. Thirdly, dating will ramp up in early 2021, as 69% of Bumble daters say they’re planning to use dating apps just as much as they do now, if not more through Valentine’s Day 2021.
