For those of us who typically hit up our preferred hair salon every few weeks for a cut and color, we’re oh-so-ready to return to the chair. Till then, though, if you’re wondering how you can maintain your locks or when you should reschedule that much-needed hair appointment, read on. Some of our local hair experts answer these questions and more.
What are your current operations during COVID-19, and how are you still serving clients?
“Staying connected with our clients has been our number one goal throughout this whole situation,” says Mandy Burnett, owner of Harper & Olive Salon. “Two of our product lines acted quickly and set up a way for salon partners to have an online link to share with clients, which allows our salon to receive a percentage of product sales. So, that has been an awesome way for clients to get their needs right to their doorsteps.”
Despite not being able to bring clients into the salon, Suzanne Shepherd of Shine Salon tells us they are there for support, recommending clients focus on getting their hair healthy during this time. “We are encouraging our clients to take this break as an opportunity to work in extra deep conditioning treatments, and to give their hair a reprieve from the heat by embracing their natural texture,” she says. They are offering free product delivery to in-town folks, as well as free shipping to their out-of-town clients, and orders can be placed by direct messaging them on Instagram or Facebook, or by emailing [email protected].
If you’re in need of any product, Escape Day Spa and Salon is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for curbside pickup, allowing you to grab something to cover those pesky roots or add gloss to refresh your tone. Paige Simmons Salon may be closed for business, but it hasn’t stopped owner Paige Simmons from helping clients in any way she can. She’s not only doing porch pickups for clients in desperate need of color, but she has even mailed kits out to some clients who live farther away.

Are you offering root touch-up kits or selling any products to help your clients get through this period of time?
Tami Hall, owner of Escape Day Spa, doesn’t recommend coloring your hair at home since there’s so much room for error. However, she says, “We do have great options for hiding those gray roots and shining up that dull color.” For root touch-ups or covering gray hair, Escape carries Bumble and Bumble Color Sticks that resemble lipstick. Mandy says Harper & Olive has handled several deliveries for “emergency root touch spray” to get clients through until their reopen date, while Paige is making color kits for Paige Simmons Salon clients so they can pick them up from the salon porch. “I call them color porch drops,” she says. “I set up a day and time, and then they text me when they arrive and remain in the car while I premix their color. I then walk the color out, with everything they need, and set it on my porch.”
“Safer at home” also offers ample time to focus on hair growth, and Suzanne relays that Shine Salon has had a jump in clients who want to start Zenagen treatments to help with regrowth and repair. She also tells us, “Color Wow Root Cover Up Powder has been a saving grace for stretching out hair color until we are able to give in-person love.”

Are you moving forward with booking post-COVID appointments, or do you have tips on how we can score one of the first ones after quarantine?
Paige says she has already begun booking post-COVID appointments for Paige Simmons Salon clients, though she admits, “I have had to reschedule a couple of times. This last time, I booked most clients two appointments for backup.” She suggests being on top of booking your appointments in advance because everyone will want one once the Safer at Home order is lifted. In fact, she has already begun booking well into June and July. “The best way to get an appointment is to be flexible and willing to book with the understanding that it might have to be moved; it is out of our control,” she says, adding, “I would rather have a couple of appointments booked over the rebooking process. The bottom line is, don’t just wait. Be in contact with your stylist — it’s not wrong to be thinking ahead.”
“We are keeping track of missed appointments and having conversations with groups of salon professionals about what the new norm will look like,” adds Suzanne of Shine Salon. “Moving forward, we’re likely going to incorporate a combination of extended hours and staggered appointments so we can safely accommodate clients. We miss all of our clients so much and can’t wait to see everyone! We will be reaching out to reschedule, the moment we get the okay.”
Harper & Olive Salon anticipates a May reopen, and they are currently allowing clients to schedule via their salon app and website. “Appointments are flying!” exclaims Mandy. Clients can also call into the salon, as all salon calls have been forwarded to Mandy’s cell phone to ensure nothing is missed. “We cannot wait to have our beautiful guests back in the chair so we can start putting smiles back on faces. We will be allowing two stylists to work a day, plus our receptionist, taking time after each client to do a thorough wipe down. And we will be keeping 12 to 15 feet between each stylist — thankfully, we have two floors in our salon, which helps with social distancing.”
The Escape Day Spa and Salon stylist team is ready to welcome back clients as well. Till then, though, they strongly recommend you do not color your hair at home since it can take several appointments (and quite a bit of time and money) to get your hair back to a healthy, gorgeous salon color again.
