Aspen’s newest après spot is quietly bringing some big names to town through its free concert series in partnership with the Belly Up and Bumble.
The latest act to take The Snow Lodge stage is The Chainsmokers, who will play a free show at the slopeside venue Wednesday afternoon.
Alex Pall, one half of the electronic duo known as The Chainsmokers, wrote via text that the two “couldn’t be happier to see our dear friend, Jayma [Cardoso].” Cardoso is the owner and creative director of The Snow Lodge and its longstanding sister location, The Surf Lodge, in Montauk, New York.
“Teaming up with our friends at Belly Up to do après-ski at The Snow Lodge was something we couldn’t pass up,” Pall said. “We have been coming back to Aspen for a few years now and it’s become like a second home. Having The Surf Lodge join the culture of Aspen was a perfect fit and we are excited to be a part of its first year.”
On Thursday, The Chainsmokers will headline Belly Up, which partnered with The Snow Lodge to help book acts. The free shows during aprés are an extension of The Surf Lodge’s successful summer concert series that started 12 years ago.
“I want to bring the magic of the concerts to après-ski in Aspen,” Cardoso said. She cited an eclectic, impressive list of artists who have performed at the popular Montauk hotel and bar over the years, including John Legend, Willie Nelson, Courtney Love, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Rufus Du Sol, Blood Orange, Gary Clark Jr. and Leon Bridges.
Canadian electronic duo Bob Moses kicked off the winter concert series on Dec. 30, four days after The Snow Lodge opened its doors. Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson, pop group lovelytheband and a number of other electronic acts have followed in the weeks since.
Last weekend alone, singer-songwriters Noah Cyrus, Caroline Vreeland and the indie-pop trio SHAED performed at The Snow Lodge during après. See sidebar for a complete lineup of upcoming shows known as of press time.
Contributing to the cool factor of the winter iteration is the fact that many locals may be surprised to discover an act such as The Chainsmokers casually croon to the tune of post-ski beers.
The Snow Lodge has relied exclusively on its Surf Lodge mailing list and Instagram page (@thesurflodge) to promote the Aspen shows, said Alan Rish, a public relations rep for both lodges. He credited the social and dating app, Bumble, for sponsoring the series. Without Bumble’s support, “a tiny venue like ours could never afford to book these great acts,” he said.
DJ and model Ashley Smith will open The Chainsmokers’ show at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
No stranger to Aspen or even appearing locally as a surprise guest, Pall said the town “is near and dear to our hearts.”
