Charges filed in date rape

A Kankakee man is accused of raping a woman after taking her out for dinner on her birthday.

Samuel B. Mason, 61, is being held on $100,000 bond for the July 30 incident, when he is said to have held the woman in his home all night, letting her leave the following morning.

Mason is facing three counts of criminal sexual assault and two counts of violating a stalking and no contact order. He made his initial court appearance on Monday.

According to prosecutors, Mason allegedly coaxed the woman back to his home with talk of a gift. When she left the home on July 31, the woman went to the Kankakee County Courthouse to file a restraining order. It is unclear why it took more than a week for police to make an arrest, but it occurred after Mason allegedly left several voicemails on the victim’s phone on Aug. 5 and 6.

The case will be presented to the grand jury on Aug. 20. Mason’s next court date is Aug. 27.
