Date rape drug law sent to governor

SACRAMENTO — A law allowing prosecutors to seek felony charges against people caught with common date rape drugs has been sent to Gov. Jerry Brown for his approval.

The legislation, authored by State Sen. Cathleen Galgiani, D-Stockton, seeks to close a loophole created by voter approval of Proposition 47, which reclassified many drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors.

“When a ballot measure of this type is placed in front of voters, the potential for unintended consequences arise. I firmly believe that voters in California did not intend to weaken sexual assault statutes,” Galgiani said in a press release on Thursday.

Galgiani represents Lodi in the State Senate.
