‘Date Rape Drug’ Reports on MSU Under Investigation

Reports of ‘date rape drug’ incidents around the Montana State University campus surfaced over the weekend and students are reminded to be vigilant.

On Saturday, an alert was sent to all MSU students via email informing them that two women were possibly given a ‘date rape drug’ at a party near campus.

The term ‘date rape drug’ refers to a drug administered to an individual without their consent, usually through an alcoholic beverage. The side effects often times leaves the victim vulnerable to sexual assault.

“These drugs go through your system very quickly and if a victim doesn’t reports within hours after a rape has occurred, it is hard to prove whether that drug was present or not,” said deputy chief  Rich McLane with the Bozeman Police Department.

The Bozeman Police Department reports it is fairly common that sexual assault victims say they have been drugged.

McLane said, “We’ve had very few times that we’ve been able to prove drugs were actually given to a victim, that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen it just means we couldn’t prove whether it happened or not.”

The alert sent to students stated that neither woman was sexually assaulted over the weekend. But not all students around campus say the alert came as a surprise.

“As I become more experienced in my college years it has become more and more of an issue, I’ve never had a firsthand issue with it but I have known people who may have had a problem with it,” said MSU student Dirk Schumacher.

Women’s Health reports that females between the ages of 20 and 24 are far more likely to be sexually assaulted than any other age group.

MSU student Haley Craven said, “I definitely would think about it, just because unfortunately I think females are very targeted.”

Authorities recommend that you be vigilant at all times while out and always be around people you know and trust.

“There have been situations that I have been in where I have definitely thought about it, but if you are educated enough on the subject I don’t think it should ever become an issue,” said Craven.

Both incidents are still under investigation. Anyone with information is being asked to call the authorities.
