FACEBOOK has quietly released a brand new app that lets you make hilarious memes.
The app was created by Facebook’s secretive “experimental” app division – and it’s called Whale.
Memes are an increasingly popular way for teens and adults alike to communicate.
But making memes can be difficult, and often require photo-editing or graphic-making skills.
Facebook’s Whale app joins a growing selection of tools that make it easy to create memes on your own, as revealed by The Information.
Screenshots of the app show picture and text editing, as well as a ‘Share’ function that lets you export memes to Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
“No distractions, no hidden subscription pricing,” reads Whale’s App Store description.
“Use your own images or choose from our stock photo library and get creative with text, tools, effects, and more right inside the app.”
Sadly the app is currently only available in Canada, and there’s no word on a wider release.
Ironically, the first app that appears when you search ‘Whale’ in Apple’s UK App Store is Whale Chat – an adult hook-up serviced that promises flirting and naughty chats.
It could easily be confused with Facebook’s own teen-focused app, which isn’t exactly ideal.
Facebook’s Whale app was uploaded to the App Store by a company called NPE Team LLC.
NPE stands for New Product Experimentation, and is a part of Facebook’s experimental app division.
It’s headed up by the former general manager of extinct (but once hugely popular) social app Vine – Jason Toff.
This isn’t the first time Facebook has created a teen-focused app that’s been killed off.
In 2012, it launched a Snapchat-style app called Poke that was culled after just two years.
This was followed by another Snapchat “clone” called Slingshot that was available from 2014 to 2015.
In other news, a new Facebook Dating feature lets you find “secret admirers” in your friends list.
Facebook recently unveiled a brand new logo that will appear on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
