A 48-year-old Pickering man allegedly used an online dating site to troll for unsuspecting victims and defraud them out of their hard-earned cash.

Durham Regional Police claim the accused fraudster used the profile name “VINCY1969” on Plenty Of Fish to meet and befriend at least two women between September and November of 2017.

“He promised them discounted prices for merchandise in exchange for money,” Const. George Tudos alleged Thursday, explaining the two women allegedly provided email money transfers to the accused and “never received any products as promised.”

“The victims then contacted police to report the fraud,” he added.

Hugh Odel Brian Gilbert was arrested, charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000 and released on a promise to appear.

“The investigation is ongoing and police want to ensure there are no further victims,” Tudos said.
