A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle that began in Hermon ended with spike strips and a foot chase in Bangor.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office reports multiple calls were made to law enforcement just before 1:00 Sunday afternoon about a man who was allegedly seen on Route 2 in Carmel, heading toward Hermon. Witnesses told police he was acting erratically and going onto other people’s property.
When a Deputy arrived on the scene to investigate, he saw the man jump into a vehicle that had come to a stop. The man allegedly physically forced the driver out of the vehicle and drove off. Other agencies were alerted and members of the Sheriff’s Office, as well as Bangor and Maine State Police began pursuing the vehicle through Hermon and into Bangor. Spike mats were deployed by both the Sheriff’s Office and State Police, which deflated the vehicle’s tires, forcing it to come to a stop on Outer Hammond Street in Bangor, near the Ranger Inn. The driver tried to drive off but struck a Sheriff’s Office cruiser. Maine State Police then used what’s known as a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver to bring the pursuit to an end.
At this point, the man tried to run away but was taken into custody by several officers. As a result of this incident, Dylan Baker, 20, was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation. A witness to the incident caught the end of the pursuit on video and posted it to Facebook.
