Bengaluru man’s search for love on dating app turns costly, loses Rs 2.5 lakh to online scammer | #lovescams | #datingapps

New Delhi,UPDATED: Aug 26, 2023 16:29 IST

In a story that warns about the dangers of the internet, a 30-year-old tech enthusiast living in Bengaluru found himself in a troubling situation due to a popular dating app. Hoping to make new friends, he got caught up in a terrible situation that led to a big loss. He became a victim of a type of online trickery called “sextortion,” where people are manipulated and blackmailed.

As per the report by New Indian Express, the tech-savvy guy was drawn in by the exciting things he heard about the dating app. He thought he might find real friends and connections there. But things took a terrible turn that he didn’t expect. He came across a woman named Nikita and another person, Aravind Shukla. They saw his vulnerability and decided to take advantage of it.

Their plan unfolded quickly. Nikita, who was 25 years old, started talking to him on August 16. She got his phone number and social media details in no time. They began having video chats on a messaging app. But these conversations became strange and scary. Nikita tricked him into doing things on camera that he didn’t want to do. What he didn’t know was that she was recording all of it.

Then, things got even worse. Nikita threatened to share the embarrassing videos with all his friends on social media unless he gave her money. She used his fear to make him send money to different bank accounts she provided. On top of that, a man claiming to be Shukla, a police officer from Uttar Pradesh, started calling him and making threats.

Feeling upset and financially drained, the victim took a brave step and contacted the police in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru. He reported what had happened to him. He had lost around Rs 2.6 lakh, a lot of money, all because he trusted the wrong people on the internet.

Now, the police are on the case. The Cyber Crime Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is working hard to solve this. They are trying to find out where the money went and catch the people responsible. They’re also telling everyone to be careful when they talk to strangers online, especially on social media and dating apps. What might seem harmless can quickly become a dangerous trap.

This story teaches us an important lesson about the risks of using the internet. It’s a reminder that not everything online is what it seems. Sometimes, bad people take advantage of others. So, when we’re trying to connect with others, we have to be really careful and make sure we’re staying safe.
