(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Romance scams can break your heart and your bank account.
The upcoming holiday season sees an uptick in those seeking companionship and susceptible to online romance scams where fraudsters post fake enticing profiles to lure their victims in.
Along with embarrassment and emotional stress, losses are steep for victims, averaging over $2,000.
Some of the red flags to watch out for are:
-Someone giving you excuse after excuse of why they are never able to meet with you in person often claiming to be abroad for business or military deployment.
-Fake dating websites and fake profiles can be easily created and cause huge losses of money and information.
-Beware because scammers always like to move the relationship very fast and claim they have fallen for you without ever meeting.
