Bumble and Tinder scam on rise: Here is how you can keep yourself safe on these dating apps | #lovescams | #datingapps

Meeting someone new on a dating app has its share of challenges. No, we are not talking about compatibility issues, but about how the person at the other end is a complete stranger. Until you meet the person you have been talking to, you have no idea who they really are. And this is being widely exploited by scammers.

Bumble and Tinder scams on the rise in India

These days, cases of scams carried out through online dating apps are on the rise. Talking specifically about India, there have been several recent cases of people being scammed by fake profiles on dating apps.

In one case, a woman, working for a private firm in Bengaluru, had accused her Tinder match of duping her of Rs 4.5 lakh. The scammer had allegedly made the woman fall in love with him and had told her that he was living in the UK. He fooled the woman by telling her that he was coming to India to meet her. While the woman was elated to see her boyfriend in real life, it was soon revealed that this was all a trap.

The woman was tricked by the scammer into depositing Rs 4.5 lakh. The victim then approached the police in hopes of recovering her money.

In another recent case, a man based out of Delhi was scammed out of Rs 15,000 when he met a woman on Bumble and went on a date with her. Sharing the incident on X, the man asked the authorities to intervene and do something about such scams.

These are just a few examples of the many dating app scams that are happening in India. Scammers use a variety of methods to deceive their victims, including creating fake profiles, making false promises, and using pressure tactics.

How to stay safe from online dating scams

So, how can you stay safe from such scams? Here are a few tips:

  • Be careful about the information you share – Don’t share your personal information, such as your home address or phone number, with someone you just met on a dating app. This might be misused later.
  • Don’t send money to someone you met on a dating app– No matter how good their story sounds, never send money to someone you’ve never met in person.
  • Be suspicious of people who ask for money- If someone starts asking you for money, it is a major red flag that they might be a scammer.
  • Use a reverse image search to check the person’s profile picture- This can help you to see if the picture is being used on other websites or social media profiles and might give you an idea if it is a fake profile or not.
  • Do a Google search of the person’s name- This might help you to see if there are any red flags about the person.

These tips might help you escape a situation that you would have regretted later. Remember these tips for the next time you start swiping left and right.
