Cork couple gutted as hotel cancels wedding just months away | #daitngscams | #lovescams

One East Cork couple has been left devastated by the news that their wedding reception has been cancelled after the venue rang them up yesterday and said that they “won’t be operating as a hotel from next week.”

Guests booked in for the summer and people coming for the Ironman festival in August have had their bookings cancelled at the Quality Hotel in Youghal after news broke locally that a new company is taking control of the hotel from next week.

There are fears that staff will be made redundant and many locals are concerned about the impact that this move could have on tourism in the town.

It is understood that the government is in talks with the new company about housing Ukrainian refugees there.

Steve Mc Geough, 55, and his fiance Joanna O’ Donovan, 51, were so looking forward to their wedding party on July 11th at the Quality Hotel, and they were shocked to be informed that their booking has been cancelled yesterday.

“The receptionist rang up at half 12 in the afternoon and said sorry we aren’t taking any future bookings, and we aren’t operating as a hotel from next week, she wouldn’t tell me any more,” Cork man Steve said.

“I asked her what on earth we were going to do three months out from the wedding, when it is taking place at the height of summer and everywhere will be booked up. She said she would see if anything could be done for us, but no one has called me back since, I am shocked,” he added.

Steve and his wife are hoping to secure another venue for their big day

Steve and Joanna live locally. He is a Cork city man and he met his bride-to-be, who is South African, through an online dating site six years ago when he moved out to live in Youghal.

“We love living here and we booked the hotel because it’s right in front of the boardwalk and the views are stunning, we had heard great reports from other people who booked it for their wedding, and we never expected this treatment,” Steve said.

The former radio presenter said that he has had trouble contacting the member of staff who he and his partner were liaising with about their upcoming nuptials, as he has been trying to pay the bill for his wedding party in advance for the last seven weeks.

“I called into the hotel in person, I emailed, I rang many many times, and no one seemed to be able to tell me when I could come in and pay the bill,” Steve said.

He says that his partner’s head is now “all over the place” as invites have been sent out to 80 guests, six double rooms were booked for family to stay at the hotel for the wedding at a price of €179 each, and the couple are due to go on honeymoon in Bulgaria afterwards, but now they have no venue for the reception.

“We are doing our best to get something sorted and we are determined to go ahead with this, we waited to get married for years because of Covid-19 and we have put a lot of effort into these plans, it’s a day we are really looking forward to,” Steve said.

One of the director’s of the company which the hotel is registered to declined to comment when CorkBeo reached out.

The Department of Equality said that they were not in a position to comment. Cork County Council has said that they have not been involved and that any deals on securing accommodation for refugees would go through the government’s International Protection Accommodation Team.
