Cortland is the latest Sheriff’s office advising people they are not selling t-shirts.
The office is publicizing images of the advertisements by text trying to get victims to disclose information for the purchase of merchandise that doesn’t exist. Some residents are also being contacted by phone.
Broome and Chenango Sheriff’s offices have also been targeted in the scam and have also issued statements saying they are not selling merchandise featuring sheriffs’ office logos, names or badge images.
In the cases in Cortland County, the company is identified as “Shirt Nuaty” and sports images of black and white shirts and a mug with the Cortland County sheriff’s office name on the items and a slogan: “Everyone is Created Equal But Only the Finest Served In.. Cortland County Sheriff’s Office”.
Authorities say people should be cautious when they get phone calls or text messages from unfamiliar numbers or people and do not give out personal information over the phone or internet.
Anyone who thinks they are being scammed or who have questions should contact their local law enforcement authorities.
