Emmerdale star Louise Jameson praises soap for “important” Mary scam storyline | #daitngscams | #lovescams

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale recently revealed that Mary Goskirk’s new love interest Faye is actually a con artist who has been trying to take advantage of her in order to empty her bank account.

A physical confrontation will occur in scenes airing next week after a heartbroken Mary learns the truth, leaving her bloodied and concussed as Faye makes her escape.

Speaking about why this storyline for her character is so relevant, actress Louise Jameson talked about how older people are often the target of scammers and praised the soap for raising awareness of it.

“I think it’s incredibly important, especially for people my age who are terrified of appearing foolish,” she said.

“The scammers are amazingly clever and sophisticated about the way they go about emptying people’s bank balances.

“When I turned 70, it was extraordinary — it was like some algorithm had been alerted and ever since then, I would say at least twice a week I get a text, phone call or email offering me something at a ridiculously cheap price, or messages claiming they’re an alert from my bank.

“I have a younger tech-savvy friend, so if I’m unsure of anything, I pass it on to him.”

Louise described Mary as “like a teenager” in how she was completely blinded by how in love she was, and feels like this awful experience will put her off looking for a relationship for the time being.

“This woman, who seems adorable, takes her for a ride and tries to empty her bank balance,” she said. “Mary saw no signs of it at all.

“And even when Suzy tries to flag it up, Mary won’t hear it and then donates even more money into Faye’s bank account.”

However, Louise added that while this horrible experience and breach of trust will naturally affect Mary, it doesn’t necessarily mean that she won’t find love some day.

“I think it will take a while. I don’t think she’ll actively go looking for love, but I suspect the writers will find a way of making sure love finds Mary…” she said.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
