Pune: The crime branch, Pune, on Monday said a woman from Uttarakhand and her friend from Delhi — both former event managers — had duped around 40 people in dating app frauds since 2022.“Analysis of call details records, dating apps and statements obtained from the two bank accounts of Kavita alias Pooja Bhat (27) and one from the account of Nitesh Singh (25) revealed that they had duped large numbers of people in Pune district, among other places,” said senior inspector Bharat Jadhav of the social security cell of the crime branch.Bhat and Singh were taken into custody from Mira Road near Mumbai and were brought to Pune for further action on October 29.Jadhav said, “We have counselled the victims in Pune and registered three complaints with the Chandannagar, Airport and Sinhagad Road police in the city. We have lodged two more complaints with the Hinjewadi police under the Pimpri Chinchwad police and the Panvel taluka police under the Navi Mumbai police.”The duo admitted to duping two people in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, too, during the questioning .Jadhav said, “We have contacted victims outside Maharashtra and have appealed to them to fearlessly come forward and register complaints against Bhat and Singh at the police stations concerned, but they are afraid of filing complaints fearing that they would be defamed and their families would get disturbed.”He said the duo’s bank accounts with over Rs50.61 lakh were frozen. Besides, some cash was recovered from the woman, he added.Senior inspector Meenal Patil of the Pune Cyber Police in an advisory said, “Before entering into any relationship, one should insist on a meeting in person with the virtual friend and verify the credentials.”
