Grey Bruce OPP warn of romance scams | #datingscams | #lovescams

Grey Bruce OPP are using Fraud Prevention month, which is March, to highlight some of the most common scams being reported.

OPP report they are dealing with an increase in the number of calls for service regarding romance scams.

Police stated that criminals look for victims online who are single or recently unattached, often through dating websites, email or social medial platforms.

In some cases, prolonged interaction with individuals has cost some victims tens of thousands of dollars before the “relationship” ends, usually without ever meeting in person.

OPP warn people to avoid revealing any personal information online, and to double check the person’s name, company or address. You should also question why someone you have never met declares their love after a few online exchanges. Never send money or financial information to someone you have never met.

If you or someone you know may have been the victim of a romance scam, contact your local police service or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
