Criminal gangs are muscling in on herbs and spices as food supply chains suffer from the combined pressure of Brexit, Covid and the war in Ukraine.

Cases are rising and criminal networks have targeted Scotland, said Ron McNaughton, head of the food crime and incidents unit at Food Standards Scotland.

“Herbs and spices have been problematic because we are talking about international supply chains. The longer the chain gets, the more difficult it becomes to secure,” McNaughton said.

Lucrative but dangerous frauds include bulking out expensive spices such as saffron with inferior products or carcinogens such as lead chromate.

McNaughton, who for 30 years was an investigator with Police Scotland, said: “Price increases of food and the war in Ukraine are having a direct impact
