Police in the Interior are investigating after a woman was reportedly scammed out of thousands of dollars in an apparent romance scam recently.
According to Lillooet RCMP, on April 7, a woman told police that she had gone to South Africa in 2021 and met a man who appeared well off and well connected. This resulted in her falling “madly in love.”
After returning to Canada, the couple made plans to have the man join her in North America in a short time.
“The man began asking the woman to send him money for various expenses that included plane tickets, and buying diamonds,” said Cst. Andrew Hodges. “Over the course of the next three months, the woman sent the man a total of over $23,000.”
Time and time again, the man delayed his trip and kept asking for money. Eventually, the woman refused to send more and the love affair was over.
Police are now warning others over romance scams in their area.
