It’s a day to show your appreciation for police officers on this Monday. It’s National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. It’s a great time to show how much you appreciate the work the officers do every day. Officers throughout country have been criticized over the last 5 years for a variety of issues and that’s made it tough to find people who want to become future officers. Yakima Officers say a majority of people they deal with support their work. Capt. Jay Seely says people in Yakima show their appreciation every day and they have for many years.
National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day started in 2015 and was created by a number of organizations to show thanks to the officers. One of the main organizations is C.O.P.S – Concerns of Police Survivors. The organization says the officers need to know they’re appreciated by the people they protect.
108 Police Officers make up the Yakima Police Department with the department hoping in 2023 to hire more officers. The city is budgeted to hire 143 full time Officers. Like many other agencies the Yakima Police Department has been struggling to get more officers hired at a time when many are criticizing law enforcement.
More than 900,000 police officers are on the job in America Today.
