The backstory of Wordle and how to play

Wordle is a free online game that gives a five-letter word for users to guess every day. Unlocking the word has more to do with cracking codes than it does linguistics, but it’s a fun competition for users of all ages.

Start by guessing what the five-letter word is. Based on your guess, letters will appear in green or yellow. If letters are in yellow, it means the letters appear somewhere in the word but not in the positions you chose.

If the letters are in green, you’ve picked the correct letters in the proper sequence. You can then continue to guess until you get the word right. You have six tries overall to guess.

How to avoid clones and scams

Before you play Wordle, beware. The game’s popularity has given rise to multiple fakes and even some scams to lure you in. Apps claiming to be Wordle have been rampant across the app store. Wordle can only be played online, there are no apps currently developed, so if you see one, it’s a scam.

Websites that make you pay are also popping up, so be sure to remember, Wordle is free. You can access the official site by heading here.

I’ll take a vowel please

Pros agree. Your first guess should always be a word with a lot of vowels. This is to knock out the most common word and vowel combinations out there. Try words like peony or equal.

Try common constant clusters

A common tip is to try words with common constant clusters. Why? The words are always five letters, which means the likelihood of having a constant cluster in the word is very high.

Try clusters like:

Grab some help

We never recommend cheating, but there are a ton of websites out there designed to help you with games like Scrabble and Words with Friends. Simply enter letters from your first guess and see what comes up.

You can subsequently check after each of your guesses.

Practice, practice, practice

The only way to get better at any game is to practice, practice, practice. The more you play, the better you’ll get, so making it a goal to play Wordle daily will help you get the hang of it a whole lot quicker.

As you play, take note of the above tips, and what works and what doesn’t so you can do trial and error until you find a winning method.
