KUALA LUMPUR: A 34-year-old man has been detained for allegedly duping a woman of RM152,500 in a love scam.

Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Asst Comm Mohd Mahidisham Ishak said the 39-year-old victim lodged a report on April 9, claiming that the suspect had cheated her after promising to marry her.

“The victim got to know the suspect on social media. He promised to marry her but before the wedding could take place, the victim helped him to pay off some personal debts,” he said in a statement on Friday (April 15).

He said the victim handed over RM30,000 worth of jewellery as well as RM122,500 cash before realising she had been scammed.

“We believe the suspect has duped other women as well,” he said.

“We also seized various items including three mobile phones, RM18,000 cash and nine gold bars.

“The suspect has been remanded until Saturday (April 16), he said.

He also reminded the public to conduct background checks on their prospective partners before starting a relationship.
