MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford Police Department has reported a rise in phone call scams — with a popular one targeting restaurant and shopping center employees.
According to a news release from MPD, scammers have called employees and impersonated someone at the person’s corporate or branch office. The scammer then tells the victim to buy gift cards or bitcoin using company money.
“Anyone requesting you to take money from your employer and purchase gift cards or bitcoin is more than likely a scam,” the release said. “MPD advises employees to speak with their direct or corporate manager regarding the requests of these purchases before taking any action. We also encourage employers to inform their employees about how these scams happen.”
