Spanish scam

Paul had long dreamt about living and working overseas and finally landed his dream role in Spain.

To secure this incredible position and arrange his work permit he provided copies of his bank and identification records, including his passport to his future employer.

Paul then bought a one-way ticket, packed up his life, and flew to London.

In his excitement, Paul didn’t do much research into his new employer, but the hiring manager – who he’d spoken to on the phone – had given him the web address, which looked authentic.

After arriving, Paul reached out to his new employer, but his multiple emails went unanswered. And when Paul phoned the previously active landline, he discovered it had been disconnected.

Paul begun to panic; he was far away from home, had no source of income, and was quickly running out of savings. Realising he had been scammed, Paul contacted the Australian Embassy in Spain for support.

Following the consular officer’s advice, Paul froze his bank accounts, ordered an online replacement licence and reported the scam to the local authorities. The consular officer also cancelled his existing passport and reissued an emergency one to enable him to return to Australia.

The consular officer assigned to Paul’s case mentioned that scams can occur and are designed to lure people overseas with the promise of jobs, romance, or money.

In this case, the offer seemed too good to be true, and it was.
