New Milford Police Department Posts Warning About Latest Scam | #datingscams | #lovescams | #facebookscams

Scams are everywhere. From the highest level of society to the lowest, everyone is a target and the New Milford Police Department wants you to be aware of one of the latest to go around. **SCAM ALERT**

In a recent Facebook post, they point out that this scam is happening in various parts of the United States, including Connecticut. One thing I have never received is a jury duty summons and this particular scam involves people being threatened by phone with arrest over a missed summons. The Facebook post reads:

The callers have impersonated court officials, U.S. Marshals, and other state and federal law enforcement officers and have telephoned random victims to convince them to pay a fine to avoid arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

Now that their victim has answered the phone and “on the hook”, what is the scam really about, the post continues.

The callers insisted that their victims arrange to pay cash or pre-paid credit cards…….Any fine for failure to appear for jury duty will be imposed by a judge during an open session of court, and the summoned juror will be given the opportunity to explain the failure to appear.

The New Milford Police also warn potential victims, that during the call they may actually be transferred to make it seem or “give the illusion” that the call is legit and you are in danger of finding your butt behind bars unless you fork over some Venmo cash. They also say in the post:

Typically, jurors who miss jury duty will be contacted by the Clerk’s Office and may, in certain circumstances, be ordered to appear in court before a judge.

It’s a fraud if you get one of these calls and they advise you to hang up. Giving them a few choice words on the way out the door is totally up to you. Sometimes, just for fun, I will ask questions and badger any telemarketers that get through to the “landline” and I choose to answer.
