Online dating scammers can drain your funds | #datingscams | #lovescams

SOUTH DAKOTA (KELO) — Add online dating scams to the endless list of scams out there.

The Spearfish Police Department (SPD) is warning people about online dating scams. While many meet legitimate people online, there are con artists online running schemes for money only.

Scammers will ask you to send money for medical bills, get out of jail or to fund a visit. Once a victim agrees to pay, it can be an endless cycle of requests to send money to cover fake expenses. SPD advises never to send money to someone you met online and have never met in person.

Many times the male or female scammers make fake dating profiles, often using photos from the internet. They will also use stolen photos of military personnel. They will build online relationships with you before they disappear with your money, according to Spearfish Police.

If you question the person’s authenticity, tell a friend or family member.

If you spot a scam report it to the Federal Trade Commission or call 1-877-382-4357. By reporting fraud, you can help stop them before they get someone else’s money.
