Kanpur: A 26-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming poison allegedly after being cheated by a man, who posed himself as a government personnel and asked her to transfer money into his bank account, ensuring her that she will get financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The incident was reported from Pavorapatti village of Tirwa Kotwali police area of Kannauj district.The incident, which had taken place on October 17, came to light when the woman’s father saw the suicide message in her mobile phone on Thursday (Oct 26). He then lodged a complaint with the police.The victim, identified as Sonam, was a resident of Pavorapatti village of Tirwa Kotwali area in Kannauj district.In April this year, a man had messaged Sonam on her WhatsApp and told her that his name is Aditya and he is an employee of Vikas Bhawan. He further told her that her name has appeared in PM Awas Yojana and asked her to send documents on his WhatsApp.Once Sonam sent him the documents, Aditya asked for money in the name of registration fee. She transferred Rs 13,580 in his bank account.When Sonam discovered that the house was not allotted to her, she inquired from Aditya about the status of the same. Then Aditya asked her to transfer Rs 2,000 more and assured her that the house would be allotted to her soon.Later Sonam got suspicious and made several phone calls to Aditya on Oct 12, but the latter did not receive the calls. Distressed over the fraud, she consumed poison on Oct 17 and died during treatment on October 22 in Kanpur. Inspector Kotwali Vijay Singh said that on the complaint of the deceased’s father, an FIR has been registered against the accused and his associate, and investigation has been initiated.
