A couple of scams are making their way to the area and both the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the RCMP are urging residents to not take the bait.
The province recently announced the affordability payment program and scammers quickly began to find victims.
A text message is being sent by scammers who claim they are from the Alberta government and tell their intended victim in order to receive payments, they are to click a link to register for automatic bank payments.
According to the BBB the text reads: ‘Congratulations! You qualified for Alberta’s Affordability Action Plan relief payment. Fill out the secure form linked below to deposit your first payment.’
It is a scam.
“Under no circumstance would Alberta’s government send emails or texts requesting information for the affordability program.
“Users should never click on links or provide personal or banking information to text messages or emails,” said Nate Glubish, minister of technology and innovation.
The RCMP are also urging people not to send naked photos across the internet.
Brooks RCMP Cst. Michael Hagel said young adults between 17 and 18 and up to about 20 years have been sending naked photos of themselves to a dating app.
Hagel said a male victim was approached by a scammer who said she was female and they moved to another online app.
The two exchanged photos and the female scammer then wanted money or the photo would be posted online.
“There were three this week. There was no connection. They were random,” Hagel said.
He said one person called police upon realizing what was happening and a second called the anti-fraud centre.
“Parents should be aware of what kids are looking at. You can’t buy silence – You can only rent it,” he said.
If you have been a victim, (ie. you have lost money) you should report it to the RCMP at 403-794-4400, report it to the BBB at BBB.org and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
