Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a scammer impersonating local law enforcement leaders.
It mirrors a scam reported in Rochester in February. Authorities say in that scheme, the scammer claimed to be Captain Wallace from the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office and threatened their target with arrest unless they paid money, however, no one was reported to have fallen victim to it.
The latest scam involves a caller impersonating Captain James Schueller and Lt. Lee Rossman. Officials say the scammer will tell their target they must pay money to settle an arrest warrant or a fine for missing jury duty or a court appearance to avoid being arrested.
The sheriff’s office is urging anyone who gets the call not to arrange for a payment and to hang up the phone. They say law enforcement will never call and request money or gift cards.
The scam warning comes as Rochester Police reported two large scams this week. A restaurant worker lost nearly $2,500 after falling for a package scam and an elderly Rochester couple lost $14,000 after a scammer told them their bank account had been compromised.
