In 2008, the IPL media rights were handed over to the World Sports Group. But then a deal was struck between Multi Screen Media Limited (MSM) (now Sony Pictures) and World Sports Group (WSG). In this deal it was said that if MSM pays Rs 425 crore. So they will cancel their media rights.

Lalit Modi is accused of 125 crore scam
Then after this Multi Screen Media Limited allegedly paid Rs 125 crore and the rights came to the World Sports Group. At that time the BCCI secretary had told that BCCI has no role in this. Lalit Modi himself has got this deal done using his influence. Lalit was told to have a profit of 125 crores in this case. Along with this, he has also been accused that he benefited from IPL by transferring funds to his family and friends.

Lalit Modi declared fugitive
Lalit Modi was removed from the post of IPL chairman and commissioner in April 2010. There were 22 charges against him. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) imposed a fine of Rs 21.56 crore on Lalit Modi and BCCI, N Srinivasan (former president) in 2018. This was related to the violation of the FEMA Act while transferring funds for the EPL held in South Africa in 2009. Lalit Modi is declared a fugitive for India in cases of tax evasion and financial irregularities.
