Soooo, the royal family is still officially maintaining its silence about, well, everything from Prince Harry’s bombshell-filled memoir, Spare, but the Palace isn’t holding back about letting the world know (safely hidden behind and unnamed royal source, at least) how it feels about at least one of the buzzier passages from the book.

The latest anonymous royal goss comes via Us Weekly, thanks to an unnamed insider who told the magazine that the enigmatic entity that is Buckingham Palace “does not love” the fact that Harry included any of Kate Middleton’s texted words in his very not-royal-fam-approved memoir.

“They claim it’s just part of the story, and in any event, it’s egregious of Harry to publish these abbreviated excerpts,” the source explained, while conceding that the texts do “clearly show that there are two sides” to every story—including stories from the deepest inner workings of royal family. “Harry feels strongly it’s important to get the true account of what happened out there.”

ICYMI, the abbreviated excerpts of Kate Middleton texts in question had to do with the ongoing “who made who cry before the royal wedding” drama Kate had with Harry’s now-wife, Meghan Markle, before they tied the knot in May 2018. In Spare, Harry defended Meghan and included low-key receipts in the form of excerpts quoted from texts between the royal sisters-in-law.

“Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy,” Kate reportedly texted Meghan in the midst of Royal Wedding Bridesmaid Dress-gate, according to Harry’s memoir. “She cried when she tried it on at home.”

To be fair, Harry also included some words Meghan allegedly texted back to Kate in response, writing that Meghan replied, “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?”

The Bridesmaid dress incident became a whole thing when a story was leaked to tabloids suggesting that Meghan had made Kate cry during a bridezilla-level moment related to the dresses. Meghan disputed the narrative during her and Harry’s on-camera interview with Oprah Winfrey in spring 2021.

The Us Weekly source said Harry’s text leaks illustrate “that Meghan was under intense stress at the time” (she was, as he noted in the memoir, also dealing with the fallout surrounding news that her father, Thomas Markle Sr., was staging paparazzi photos ahead of the wedding) and the fact that her exchange with Kate about the bridesmaid dresses certainly “didn’t help” matters.

“There may well be other emails and texts, but nobody on Kate’s side will be releasing anything like that,” the anonymous royal source told Us Weekly, addressing the possibility of Kate/the royal family releasing text excerpts of her own in response.
