Clinton Wilkie had never touched an instrument or sang before 2015 and now he’s released multiple singles, recorded in Nashville and has a new song debuting Friday, May 27. Plus, he’s been nominated for a Josie Music Award in the category of Modern Country and will attend the 8th annual show at the Grand Ole Opry in October.

Wilkie has Crookston ties as he lived in the community for 8 years and comes back to visit regularly to see his son. While in the area, he worked at a couple of factory jobs and was in leadership roles before leaving to pursue music full time.

Wilkie got his start in music after his musician grandfather passed away in 2015 and left him his guitar. Clinton told the Times he was struggling a bit and turned to the guitar and taught himself to play.

“I played for two years before I attempted to start singing,” Wilkie explained. “I practiced doing covers of other people’s music and that’s about the time that Luke Combs started getting some recognition.”

“I learned to play watching him and watching YouTube videos to learn,” he added. “In October or November 2017 I wrote my first song and put it on Facebook which got some attention. The feeling caught and the very first video I couldn’t put my face on the camera.”

“The first song to become my first single was ‘Worth a Shot’ and within two weeks it hit 150,000 to 170,000 views,” Wilkie continued. “That got the attention of the producers I’m working with now and I started getting some calls which I thought were scams. After three weeks of trying to get my attention a producer told me the deal and I went to Nashville.”

Wilkie said now things are getting a lot busier as he just did a major Spotify list and his new song has already been accepted by three of four major play lists. Plus, he’s part of the way through with recording a full length album and when he’s in Nashville in October he will record the next three songs to finish it.

When asked if he’d be interested in performing in Crookston he said he’d love to do an outdoor show such as at Ox Cart Days and he likes to perform with a full band.
