Scammers are impersonating family members on WhatsApp to trick their victims into sharing bank details in order to defraud them.

In most cases the scammers are pretending to be the sons or daughters of their victims, claiming that they need financial assistance from their parents and asking them to send photos of the front and back of their credit cards.

They claim that they are having difficulties finalising a transaction because a payment notification is being sent to an old phone that has been broken or lost. They are texting anonymously from what they claim to be a temporary replacement phone.

Margaret Leahy, 61, from Connemara, shared screenshots of her exchange on Twitter. The scammer posed as the eldest of Leahy’s four children and said
