Author and noted African American history scholar Erica Armstrong Dunbar will present the 2023 Black Experiences Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. in Holmes Hall, Hislop Auditorium, Bucknell University. She is the Charles and Mary Beard Distinguished Professor of History at Rutgers University who is co-executive producer of the HBO series The Gilded Age, is the 2023 Black Experiences Distinguished Lecturer for the Center for Race Ethnicity and Gender and a guest speaker for The Griot Institute for the Study of Black Lives and Cultures. Dunbar’s free, public talk, entitled “Joy and Pain: Representations of Black Life from Slavery through the Gilded Age,” will discuss the ways that histories are curated and will address the responsibilities of scholars to engage narratives of Black pain and traumas along with love and triumph.

Four writers will present free, public poetry and prose readings at 7 p.m. in Bucknell Hall, as The Stadler Center for Poetry & Literary Arts hosts its West Branch Reading. A Fire Prevention and Safety event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the White Deer Community Park, 992 White Deer Pike. Hands on training and activities provided by: White Deer Township Fire Dept., Watsontown Police Dept., Geisinger Life Flight, Warrior Run Fire Dept., Pennsylvania State Police, and Union County Sheriff K-9. Activities: Kids — Hands on Fire Hose Use, fire extinguisher training and proper use at 10:15 a.m., See & Touch fire trucks, rescue trucks, ambulances, police cars; First Aid kits and fire extinguishers, fire/smoke alarms available to purchase; touch and hold real police equipment, live grease fire demonstration at 12:30, Life Flight helicopter landing at 11 a.m., fire safety and security vendors. Food and beverage stand will be open. Proceeds benefit White Deer Community Park.

5K RUN-WALK/Selinsgrove

Pumpkin Dash 5K run/walk, will be held at 9 a.m., rain or shine, along the banks of the Susquehanna River, beginning at 700 Front St., Isle of Que (near the boat launch). This timed race will take place on a flat, paved, shady loop course —perfect for both runners and walkers. Prizes and medals will be awarded to top finishers in the following age groups: 15 and under, 16-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and older. PAINTING PARTY/Selinsgrove

A painting party fundraising event held 1-3 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist, 300 Rhoads Ave., to benefit the church’s Outreach Team supporting missions. Participants will paint an 11×14 canvas picture of two pumpkins with step-by-step instructions by Judy Mummau. Cost: $30/person. Door prizes and refreshments will be provided. The Watsontown Guild is having their semi-annual Pierogi Sale from 8 a.m. to noon at Lingle’s Neighborhood Market, Brimmer Avenue and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lewisburg Farmer’s Market Fall Festival.
