SINGAPORE – Starting Tuesday (9 May), WhatsApp users in Singapore will be able make payments to some businesses from an in-chat feature.

In a statement, Meta-owned app said that this will let people and businesses buy and sell directly on WhatsApp chat without having to go to a website or open another app, or pay in person.

As a start, it’s rolling the payment method out to a small number of Singapore-based businesses. The feature will be available to many more in the coming months.

The payment method is supported by payments service provider partner, Stripe. The new feature will enable Singapore residents – those with a WhatsApp number registered in the city state – to pay using credit or debit cards, or PayNow.

“Starting today, people in Singapore can pay their local merchants on WhatsApp in just a few taps. This seamless and secure experience will transform the way people and businesses in Singapore connect on WhatsApp,” said Stephane Kasriel, head of FinTech at Meta.

Meta said that the feature is already being used by some Singapore local businesses, including plant-based butcher Love Handle, gym No Excuses, lifestyle boutique Tye Tye and pastry shop Bakerz13.

The payment method was first introduced in India in November 2020, then in Brazil last month.
