A jealous ex-boyfriend who stabbed his former lover in the heart when she joined an online dating site has been imprisoned for 15 years.
Peter Adlington, 50, was convicted of the attempted murder of Michelle Williams, 48, just hours after she told him their 20 year relationship was over.
When she broke the news, he chillingly warned: ‘If you break my heart, I will stab you in yours.’
A court heard Adlington had visited Miss Williams, a hospital worker, in the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport hours before the attack, bringing her flowers and chocolates.
But she said she had moved on and was seeing someone else after joining the ‘Plenty of Fish’ dating site.
She said she didn’t want to see me any more,’ he told the jury at Cardiff Crown Court.
‘I was shocked and I was jealous.’
He had already been drinking cider and, after leaving the hospital, stopped off for a pint before arriving at her flat in Monmouth Drive, Newport.
He let himself in with a key he had cut without her knowledge after previously taking one from her purse.
Adlington said he ‘only wanted to talk to her’ and, when she walked in at 6pm from work with new partner Jeff Eger, he asked him to leave them alone for 10 minutes.
