GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A man is facing federal charges for allegedly trying to sex traffic teens in Ottawa County.

Matthew Eugene DeWitt was indicted on four charges of attempted sex trafficking of a child and attempted sexual exploitation of a child.

The four alleged victims were identified in court records by initials.

The sex-trafficking charges carry penalties of 10 years to life in prison while the sex-exploitation charge carries a penalty of 15 to 30 years in prison.

The indictment said DeWitt last summer attempted to sex traffic three teens who were under 18 years old, with the youngest 15. He allegedly “recruited, enticed, patronized, and solicited” the teens “to engage in a commercial sex act.”

The indictment alleged that DeWitt attempted to sex traffic a fourth teen and tried to produce child pornography with the teen.

It said that from October 2019 to February 2020 he “knowingly attempted to use, persuade, induce, entice, and coerce (the teen) to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of that conduct … .”

The defendant is jailed pending arraignment and a detention hearing on Friday, July 23, in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids before Magistrate Judge Ray Kent.
