A man is facing murder charges after a woman he met on Tinder fatally overdosed on a date rape drug.

Edward Antonio Zappa, 38, was charged with third-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of Thea Renae Toles in Mounds View, Minnesota.

Toles, 43, died after overdosing on gamma hydroxybutyric acid, a drug also known as ‘GHB’ or ‘liquid ecstasy,’ which causes ‘hallucinations. euphoria, drowsiness, confusion and memory impairment,’ according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration. GHB is also know to be used a club and party drug.

Police found Toles dead at Zappa’s home on November 29, 2019 after he called 911 to report that she was not breathing, according to the criminal complaint. Toles was pronounced dead at the scene. Her cause of death was later determined to be a GHB overdose, according to Kare 11.

Investigators said Zappa met Toles on Tinder and the two arraigned to meet in person. In a text exchange, Zappa said he was at a family gathering, but told Toles she could go to his home and wait for him, which she did, according to police.

While waiting for Zappa, Toles reportedly became increasingly frustrated. Text messages recovered by investigators indicate that Zappa told Toles to wait in his bedroom and told her not to throw away a Powerade bottle with liquid in it.

He then texted her that he was on his way and that he was picking up ‘smokes,’ adding, ‘I’ve got some g. similar to alcohol.’

Toles was found dead the next day.

Zappa told officers that he had spent the night with Toles, adding that he was not aware of any drugs she may have taken. Upon examination, authorities did not find any injection marks on her body. Police later conducting toxicity tests after they discovered the text exchange between the pair.

Police said a search of Zappa’s computer showed internet searches for the physical effects of GHB, including whether it would dilate one’s pupils and how long someone would be rendered unconscious. Texts recovered by investigators also indicate Zappa used the drug and provided it to others.

Zappa has multiple previous felony convictions including assault, drug possession, domestic assault, motor vehicle theft and burglary, prosecutors said.

He is currently on probation for at least two of his convictions.
