Last spring, Michael McAllister’s inbox began to fill with messages from a woman who had a broken heart. “I thought you were the man,” wrote one. “It’s embarrassing, but I’m crazy about’you’,” said another.

Michael discovered that dating apps used his photos to catfish women, from Germany to Brazil and Chicago. So what did he do? He confronted the scammers through WhatsApp.

Today’s story explores global dating scams (which, by the way, are still going on) and the loneliness of digital life brought about by pandemics. We also hear from two women who were fooled by Michael’s scammers. One of them shares a trick to determine if a date prospect is genuine.
