An off-duty New Jersey police officer may have been drugged at a strip club before a wrong-way crash in New York City that killed two passengers, his lawyer said.
Attorney Mario Gallucci said an expert he hired “found some medical evidence,” he told a judge, that could be interpreted to suggest suspended cop Pedro Abad was given the date-rape drug known as GHB before the March crash, according to northjersey.com.
Gallucci told Rooney that it is becoming common for strip clubs to offer GHB, which is short for gamma hydroxybutyrate, to men to try to get them to spend more money, according to the report.
Abad, who pleaded not guilty last month, allegedly crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer after leaving the Curves strip club, authorities said. Tests later showed the officer’s blood alcohol content was 0.24, while the legal limit in New York is 0.08.
The Linden cop had posted a photo on Instagram of three shot glasses filled with what he identified as “Jack Daniels Fire on the house,” according to the report.
Gallucci asked the judge if he can get Abad’s blood sample from the prosecutor’s office so his experts can test for GHB; assistant District Attorney Mark Palladino said he would determine if a blood sample is available, according to nj.com.
Judge Rooney set the next hearing date for Dec. 8; Abad may not appear at that hearing because he is scheduled for surgery on Dec. 1, according to the report.
Both reports said Curves was closed this afternoon and an employee there said no one was available to comment.
Abad arrived at the courthouse at 8:30 a.m. with his aunt, who pushed his wheelchair through the open door when the court opened at 9 a.m., and Abad ignored questions from a reporter asking about his health, according to the reports.
Abad, 28, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and manslaughter as part of a 27-count indictment stemming from the crash that occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on March 20. He drove the wrong way on the West Shore Expressway in Staten Island and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer, according to the reports.
