One in three college students say they’d ‘force a woman into sex’ if ‘no-one would ever know’ – but wouldn’t consider it rape

A recent study claims that 31% of male respondents said they would rape a woman if they were sure there would be no consequences.

In the study published in ‘Violence and Gender’, 86 straight male American college students were surveyed. Over ninety percent of those surveyed were Caucasian.

Each student was given several different surveys on sexual behaviour, which included questions related to forcing women to perform sexual acts and rape, “if nobody would ever know and there wouldn’t be any consequences”.

According to the report, one-third of those studied answered that they would ‘force a woman into sexual intercourse in a “consequence-free situation” but that only 13% would consider it “rape”.

“Behaviorally descriptive survey items (i.e., ‘‘Have you ever coerced somebody to intercourse by holding them down?’’) versus labeling survey items (i.e., ‘‘Have you ever raped somebody?’’) will yield different responses”.

The students were judged on their ‘levels of hostility’ towards women by being read statements like ”I feel that many women flirt with men just to tease them and hurt them”, and their levels of hyper-masculinity” judged by whether or not they viewed dangerous activities and violence as “exciting” or “manly”. This was done, according to the researchers, to determine the “contribution of callous sexual attitudes to likelihood to commit sexual assault”.

“Callous sexual attitudes are commonly defined as attitudes that objectify women and expect men to exhibit sexual dominance”.

The study concludes that men who are ‘hostile’ would not benefit from college efforts to prevent sexual assault, but that those who “endorse force but deny rape” may.

The study, led by Professor Sarah Edwards, felt the results were important to show that there is no such thing as a “stereotypical rapist” and a “one size fits all” approach to assault prevention is not effective.
