The year saw the government ban 267 apps. These apps were banned on the ground that they are “engaging in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.” The first announcement came on June 29th when 59 apps were banned; on September 2, 118 more apps were banned; last month, on November 24, another 43 apps got added to the list. Other than these, the government also banned 47 apps that were clones of the 59 apps banned in June. The list includes apps across categories shopping, video, social networking, dating and more.
