Anyone with an online dating account will know that choosing the perfect photos for your profile is a tricky business.
From pouting selfies to candid group shots, it can be difficult to know what will help you to bag the right-swipes in a sea of profiles.
Thankfully, help is at hand, in the form of professional dating photographer Sophia Isabella, who has revealed her top tips for dating app photos.
Sophia has worked with hundreds of nervous daters who are looking to change their luck in the online dating world.
Speaking to Datingroo, she revealed her top tips and why the days of mirror selfies are most definitely in the past.
1. Make sure your photos are of good quality
While it might sound obvious, you’d be surprised how many people still have blurry photos on their dating profiles.

Sophia said: “Sharp and bright photos are more attractive. It portrays the person clearly. Blurry photos are not as engaging in dating profiles. If the quality is bad, you will look bad too.”
2. Look natural
Overly posed photos can put off many potential dates, according to Sophia.
She explained: “A picture in the moment is something that works well on dating profiles. It looks relaxed and natural.
“Unless you are a professional model, don’t pose for the dating profile picture. It looks like you are trying too much to impress.”
3. Wear some colour
While your go-to outfit might be black-on-black, Sophia advises daters to add a pop of colour to their outfits.
She said: “Put some colours in your dating life. Even if you are not really a ‘colourful clothes’ person, add some details to the black or white – a red scarf, a yellow hat or anything with colours.”
4. Ditch the selfies
Asking your friend to take your photo might be a bit embarrassing, but it is much better than awkwardly snapping a selfie, according to Sophia.
She explained: “Mirror selfies with bad lightning are the worst choice for an online dating profile photo. They look like you do not care about it and like you are not making an effort to get a good match.
“Do not hesitate to ask a friend to take a photo of you. Have some fun together and take some in the moment photos like this one. It will work well on your dating profile.”
5. Crack a smile!
Even if you are a very serious person in general, Sophia advises against posting moody photos.
She said: “Show that you like to laugh. Who doesn’t love that?
“You are a happy, satisfied, attractive person – show it and meet someone like you in the online dating world.”
6. Play around with the combination of your photos
If your profile is not garnering much attention, don’t be afraid to play around with different combinations of photos.
Sophia added: “It is good to change the combination of photos after some time to see which photos get the most matches.
“What is important here is quality over quantity. It is always better to have fewer really good pictures rather than a lot of very bad ones.”
7. Don’t use a professional headshot
Your professional headshot might be perfect for Linkedin, but it usually will not work on your dating profile.
Sophia said: “A LinkedIn photo is more formal, usually taken in the studio and can be pretty posed, so I don’t recommend it for dating apps.
“A dating profile photo should still be high quality while looking authentic, as if captured by a friend spontaneously at that “perfect” moment. Either indoor or outdoor works, but outdoor tends to work better.”
