Peter Mesko trial begins: Former Cornell student faces felony rape

Ithaca, N.Y. — About 100 people are in the Tompkins County Courthouse Tuesday morning as jury selection begins in the case of Peter Mesko, the former Cornell student who faces felony rape charges.

Mesko, 23, walked up the court steps, entered the courtroom wearing a suit and tie, and sat at the defendant’s table. His two attorneys sat to his right.

Mesko has been charged with first-degree rape, second-degree burglary and first-degree sexual abuse, according to court documents.

In a document submitted to the Tompkins County Court, Mesko’s lawyer has previously argued that the defendant’s intoxication made him unable to form the requisite intent to find him guilty of rape.

Judge Joe Cassidy is presiding. Wendy Franklin is the ADA; Mesko’s attorney is Lauren Owens.

Cassidy read a brief statement and said that the trial can be expected to go into next week.
