Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Providence Public Library is offering a program for singles interested in online dating.
“Are you interested in online dating but don’t quite know where to start?” the library says. “If so, this is the program for you! We will be discussing the various options available, safety and security in online dating, and the basics of setting up an account. Come prepared with questions and don’t be shy!”

The program, “Adult Online Dating: The Ins and Outs,” is via Zoom from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Allison Stopyra, an information services specialist for the library, said she came up with the idea for the program because of her own experiences with online dating.
“I personally found it quite daunting when I started out, and I knew that with COVID restrictions, people have been feeling increased levels of isolation and loneliness,” she said. “I think this program couldn’t have come at a better time, and I’m hoping that it will empower people to sign up that may have been too nervous or shy to do so in the past.”
The program is geared toward adults who do not have experience in online or app-based dating, the library says.

For those who cannot make the program, here are some tips from the library:
– When deciding which app works best for you, ask yourself what you are looking for. Every dating app caters to something different.
– Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! It can be intimidating talking to someone online, but the person on the other end is probably just as nervous as you!
– Safety, safety, safety! We all want to have fun and meet new people, but making sure you take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety is key.
