Norfolk OPP remind people to be vigilant after two seniors were bilked of $240,000 in separate scams.

A local bank alerted police last week that a bank client had been scammed after establishing an online relationship via a dating website. Between June 2018 and this month, the scammer asked for several emergency loans and the victim sent them about $200,000.

In another scam, a Norfolk senior resident received calls between Jan. 14 and 17 from a stranger saying they’d won a $9-million lottery prize. The victim was told to forward money and keep it a secret until the winnings arrived. The senior forwarded about $40,000 to an Odessa address.

The victim’s family called police after realizing the money had been taken from their bank account.
