Local OPP detachment commander says she’s seeing more and more large-scale fraud victimization in the area
Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP are investigating a fraud case that left a Collingwood resident out $1 million.
Police confirmed it was a romance scam and the money was defrauded over number of months.
Local OPP spokesperson, Const. Martin Hachey, said he expects it will be a long investigation as this type of fraud is complicated.
Detachment Commander Insp. Mary Shannon told Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Police Services Boards she has noted an increase in large-scale frauds.
“Certainly we’re seeing more and more victimization,” said Shannon during The Blue Mountains Police Services Board meeting. “So that is concerning. And certainly, I think, should continue to be a priority for our community.”
Since the investigation is ongoing, police did not provide more details.
