A man has been arrested, accused of opening fire at a ski resort in Austria, killing his ex-girlfriend, her family and new boyfriend. The 25-year-old handed himself into police and confessed to the massacre in the town of Kitzbuehel, Austrian news agency APA reported. The man had reportedly bumped into the new couple while out late on Saturday night. Hours later, he knocked on the front door of the family’s property and spoke to the woman’s father briefly before returning with a pistol. The woman, 19, her partner, 24, as well as her mother, father and brother, 25, were all shot dead. “We are all shocked and deeply saddened,” Kitzbühel mayor Klaus Winkler said following the incident.

The Sydney Roosters are celebrating back-to-back NRL Premierships after a 14-8 Grand Final win over the Canberra Raiders. Tens of thousands of pro-democracy protestors have taken to the streets of Hong Kong for a third straight day in defiance of a government ban on face masks. Police fired tear gas while demonstrators threw bricks and gasoline bombs.

Firefighters are on high alert in NSW and south-east Queensland. Hot and windy conditions have prompted an extreme fire danger rating in north-western NSW, while temperatures in parts of the sunshine state are tipped to reach 40 degrees.

A man has been charged, accused of stabbing two police officers north of Sydney. The man was involved in a road rage incident in Toronto at about 1pm yesterday and allegedly used a knife to slash a tyre of the vehicle. NSW Police said that he then lashed out at two officers when they confronted him at a nearby petrol station. The officers were stabbed in the leg and hand, and were taken to hospital in a stable condition. They have since been released.

A man has drowned while trying to save his 14-year-old son from a rip in the NSW mid-north coast. The duo was swimming at an unpatrolled beach at  Urunga at about 11.30 am yesterday when they got into trouble. The boy managed to reach the shore but his father couldn’t be saved.

Meanwhile, a scuba diver has drowned at Catherine Hill Bay south of Newcastle. It’s understood he suffered cardiac arrest. “Every drowning is a tragedy but two deaths in one day is heartbreaking for everyone involved and our thoughts are with the families of the victims,” Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steven Pearce said.

We’re being warned to take care online, with a cybercrime reported in Australia every 10 minutes. More than 13,500 reports have been lodged since July, with bank fraud, romance scams and ID crimes the most common offence.
